Seven Diosma, the producer from Milan, Italy, brings a level of chill reminiscent of the pre-Fantastic Vol 2 era J Dilla beat tapes on his new album TIME. Boom Bap drums, mid tempo BPMs, heavy low end and chopped Jazz and Soul samples make up the ground work for this album. Lofi Hip-Hop has it’s roots in the early to mid 90s Pete Rock instrumental style but revisions it and amplifies the techniques that made this sub genre of Hip-Hop so unique. TIME clearly displays a deep knowledge of the underlying spirit of this time but sprinkles in Lofi and current elements enough to distinguish it.
Seven Diosma’s approach is instinctual, distorted drums and tape hiss permeate throughout the tracks on the tape. Short one minute instrumentals weave the listener in and out of this Lofi journey. ‘Clockwork’, somewhat of a title track, cleverly has the tick of a Watch or Clock keep beat along with the Hi-Hats. Other song titles hint at the concept of time itself throughout this album ‘Chronos’, ‘Infinity’, ‘Slow Motion’ and even ‘Time Travel’ bring the concept home. With it’s signature sound planted in the products of the pioneers TIME is a timeless project. A collection of instrumentals brilliantly assembled and programmed, a project made to be left on repeat as one song flows into another creating a stream of beautiful ambient Hip-Hop.
