Joni Mitchell was told to perform an impossible solo and acoustic gig before her scheduled time in front of hundreds of thousands of fans. Many of them were there to see The Who perform later in the day. The event was said to be larger than the previous year’s Woodstock. Mitchell’s set was interrupted by an on-stage heckler who railed against the commercialism of the festival. Others tore down the metal fencing that circled the site in an attempt of devastating rants. The young artist preserved and won over the crowd even though she seemed to be on the verge of tears, shook by the aggressive behaviour of the audience.
