Beginning with atmospheric distortion and expanding into subtle acoustic softness to further evolve into a driving force with thundering drumming The Shadow Church’s Village Thrift EP’s opening track ‘Strong Weakness’ is emotive, empowering and vulnerable all in one. The complex combination of distant genres Electronic, Acoustic, Experimental all converge on Village Thrift. ‘Simple’ has a raw and dusty drumming backing an energetic melody that breaks down to House-like kick drum 4/4 knocking with an occasional stutter for moments before returning to the Rock fueled rawness of the previous verse-chorus segment. The optimistic upbeat piano chords from the previous track migrate to ‘Make Me Feel’ as the rhythm section has a speed up break-beat Jungle-style drum pattern and a deep down distorted synth bassline, the tone matches the ‘cry for help’ that is delivered with the rare but rewarding assurance that the cries are heard. Hip-Hop elements weave into Village Thrift in the next few tracks, with orchestra strings and more raw vocals delivered with passion. ‘First Hint’ has Trip-Hop elements, Portishead and Bjork-like sounds and moods verge with subtly sung vocals whisk above a deep bass and upbeat break-dance style drum beat. Keys oscillate in and out akin to DJ scratches before breaking down to a 90s style distorted dusty drum break and then back to the almost Acapella segment for more vocals. The journey that is ‘First Hint’ is a microcosm of Village Thrift sharp turns from one genre to the next showcase peaks and valleys in a vast musical soundscape. The second half of All You Angels drops into Industrial territory, the production the EP continues to Wow and the juxtaposition of the the uplifting messages and lyrical imagery is a great addition to the idiosyncrasies of The Shadow Church. Instrumentals alone, one would not be sure what content would fit on top, The Shadow Church have carved out a unique niche by compiling nearly every aspect of modern, and near distant, music and combined it with their unique perspective, viewpoint, and thinking to create a sound and feel truly original.
